Offered here is a 1982-S George Washington 250th Anniversary commemorative half dollar in proof, struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Assay Office to mark the 250th anniversary of Washington's birth (1732-1982). The S mint mark is on the obverse, at the right edge beside the horse's mane.
This was the first US commemorative coin since 1954 and the first 90% silver US coin since 1964, the start of the modern commemorative program. The obverse, designed by Elizabeth Jones, shows Washington on horseback; the reverse shows his home, Mount Vernon, with a heraldic eagle below.
Presentation: the coin is in its original US Mint capsule and burgundy velvet presentation box with the outer lid, together with the original Mint "PROOF 90% Silver Commemorative Half Dollar" insert, which includes the coin's specifications and a letter signed by Donna Pope, Director of the Mint.
Condition: a raw (ungraded) proof with frosted devices against mirror fields. No spots or marks were seen on the coin in the photos. The packaging shows its age: the box lid has rubbed edges and corners where the burgundy covering is worn through, plus light scuffs and a small scratch on the lid surface. The capsule has a small whitish scuff at the lower left (on the capsule), and the velvet has a few light spots. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
