Jerusalem Temple is the New Orleans Shrine, chartered in 1888, and the Clown Unit is one of its parade and hospital-visit units. Front: a smiling clown in a ruffled collar, tipping his hat with one hand and pointing with the other, with JERUSALEM TEMPLE and CLOWN UNIT around the edge. Back: ALL THE CLOWNS PAY TRIBUTE TO, 19 / 79, MARDI GRAS, and a Shriner fez bearing the Jerusalem scimitar, crescent and star emblem with LOUIS V. GALLO, "LUIGI THE CLOWN", PRESIDENT 1978, CLOWN UNIT. Both sides carry the designer's initials JLR. This was a special piece made in a low production of about 200 to 1,000, to be presented to Luigi's family and his fellow Shriners, not a parade throw. Bronze, 26 grams, 39 mm. Condition: sharp, uncirculated-looking detail with original brown bronze toning and some darker toning spots. There is a tiny bump on the rim below JERUSALEM TEMPLE on the clown side.
