Offered here is the 1976 Postmasters of America Medallic First Day Cover, Commemorative Issue No. 1, "In Commemoration of the Spirit of '76." It is the first issue of the 1976 Bicentennial year and features a Limited Edition sterling silver proof medal struck by The Franklin Mint and sculpted by Ernest Schroeder, sealed in the cover window.

What you get:

  • Sterling silver (.925) proof medal, about 25 grams (about 0.74 troy oz of pure silver), about 39 mm. Weight and size are the published specs for this Franklin Mint series; the medal is sealed in the cover and was not weighed. Front: a colonial man and woman kneeling together to plant a seedling, a symbol of growth and the colonists' hope for the future. Back: eagle over the POSTMASTERS OF AMERICA banner and shield, "1976 Commemorative Issue No. 1, Issued January 1, 1976, Pasadena, California."
  • First day cover with the se-tenant strip of three 13c Spirit of '76 stamps (Scott 1629-1631, after Archibald Willard's famous painting), canceled Pasadena, CA, January 1, 1976, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE.
  • Certificate of Authenticity printed on the back of the cover, signed by the executive directors of the National Association of Postmasters of the U.S. and the National League of Postmasters.
  • Information card telling the story of the issue and of Willard's painting.
  • All housed in a clear two-pocket album page.

Condition, please read: the medal shows bright proof mirrors with frosted devices. The fine lines and light scratches you see over both sides of the medal are on the clear plastic window of the cover, not the medal: on the planting scene side, several of them run straight past the medal's edge onto the blue panel, and the eagle side window shows the same kind of light lines and a couple of tiny specks. Because the medal is sealed under the window we cannot rule out light handling marks underneath, but none are clearly on the medal itself. On the stamps, the cancel's ink lines run across the bottom of the strip, and there are a few small dark ink strokes on the left stamp near the postmark. The cover, certificate, info card and album page look clean. Please see all photos, which are the best description.

Ungraded and uncertified; the medal has not been removed from the cover. Ships flat and protected.
