Offered here is the 1976 Postmasters of America Medallic First Day Cover, Commemorative Issue No. 11, "In Commemoration of American Nurse Clara Maass." It features a Limited Edition sterling silver proof medal struck by The Franklin Mint, sealed in the window of the cover. Clara Maass was the New Jersey nurse who in 1901 volunteered to be bitten by a yellow fever mosquito and gave her life helping prove how the disease spread. A great piece for nursing, medical history and topical collectors.
What you get:
- Sterling silver (.925) proof medal, about 25 grams (about 0.74 troy oz of pure silver), about 39 mm. Weight and size are the published specs for this Franklin Mint series; the medal is sealed in the cover and was not weighed. Front: Clara Maass in her nurse's cap, with a nurse tending a patient and the Stegomyia mosquito that carried yellow fever; the sculptor's initials are in the field. Back: eagle over the POSTMASTERS OF AMERICA banner and shield, "1976 Commemorative Issue No. 11, Issued August 18, 1976, Belleville, NJ."
- First day cover with the 13c Clara Maass "She gave her life" stamp, canceled Belleville, N.J., August 18, 1976, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE.
- Certificate of Authenticity printed on the back of the cover, signed by the executive directors of the National Association of Postmasters of the U.S. and the National League of Postmasters.
- Information card telling the story of Clara Maass and the issue.
- All housed in a clear two-pocket album page.
Condition, please read: the medal itself shows bright proof mirrors with frosted devices, with a touch of light toning at the rim; I see no marks that are clearly on the medal. The faint hazy lines in the portrait-side field and the small white specks on the eagle side appear to be dust and light scuffs on the clear window film over the medal, not on the silver. The cover front, stamp and cancel are clean and bright; the cover carries a typed address from the original subscriber. The certificate side of the cover has one tiny brown speck above the medal window. The info card is clean. The album page has a small number written on its top strip by others and a few small specks on that strip. Please see all photos, which are the best description.
Ungraded and uncertified; the medal has not been removed from the cover. Ships flat and protected.
