1976 Postmasters of America Christmas Sterling Silver Proof Medal FDC Set

Offered here is the 1976 Postmasters of America Medallic First Day Cover, Commemorative Issue No. 14, "In Commemoration of Christmas 1976." It features a Limited Edition sterling silver proof medal struck by The Franklin Mint and sculpted by Ronald Hower, sealed in the window of a colorful Christmas toys cachet designed by William Plummer.

What you get:

• Sterling silver (.925) proof medal, about 25 grams (about 0.74 troy oz of pure silver), about 39 mm. Weight and size are the published specs for this Franklin Mint series; the medal is sealed in the cover and was not weighed. Front: an old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh in a winter scene, with a couple carrying a wrapped gift, a snowy evergreen and a farmhouse in the distance. Back: eagle over the POSTMASTERS OF AMERICA banner and shield, "1976 Commemorative Issue No. 14, Issued October 27, 1976, Boston, Massachusetts."
• First day cover with the 13c 1976 Christmas stamp showing Nathaniel Currier's 1855 lithograph "Winter Pastime," canceled Boston, MA, October 27, 1976, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE.
• Certificate of Authenticity printed on the back of the cover, signed by the executive directors of the National Association of Postmasters of the U.S. and the National League of Postmasters.
• Information card telling the story of the issue and of Currier and Ives.
• All housed in a clear two-pocket album page.

Condition, please read: the medal shows bright proof mirrors with frosted devices. In fairness, the sleigh side has a few light hairlines and tiny specks in the mirror fields; some of these may be on the clear window over the medal. The eagle side is clean, with a touch of light toning at the rim edge. The cover, certificate and info card look clean and bright; the cover carries a typed address from the original subscriber. Please see all photos, which are the best description.

Ungraded and uncertified; the medal has not been removed from the cover. Ships flat and protected.
