Offered here is the 1976 Postmasters of America Medallic First Day Cover, Commemorative Issue No. 13, issued for Christmas 1976 with the traditional Nativity stamp. It contains a Limited Edition sterling silver proof medal struck by The Franklin Mint, sealed in the window of an embossed cachet showing the town of Bethlehem under the Christmas star.

What you get:

  • Sterling silver (.925) proof medal, about 25 grams (about 0.74 troy oz of pure silver), about 39 mm. Weight and size are the published specs for this Franklin Mint series; the medal is sealed in the cover and was not weighed. Front: the angel appearing to the shepherds, three shepherds with crooks and sheep beneath a tree, in high relief against mirror fields. Back: eagle over the POSTMASTERS OF AMERICA banner and shield, "1976 Commemorative Issue No. 13, Issued October 27, 1976, Boston, Massachusetts."
  • First day cover with the 13c 1976 Christmas Nativity stamp (Scott 1701, after the painting by John Singleton Copley in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), canceled Boston, MA, October 27, 1976, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE.
  • Certificate of Authenticity printed on the back of the cover, "Postmasters of America ~ 1976 Commemorative Issue No. 13," signed by the executive directors of the National Association of Postmasters of the U.S. and the National League of Postmasters.
  • Original Postmasters of America "Dear Collector" letter that came with this issue, and a Postmasters of America "Dear Subscriber" envelope.
  • All housed in a clear two-pocket album page.

Condition, please read: the medal shows bright proof mirrors with frosted devices. Here is where the marks you may see in the photos actually are:

  • Clear window over the medal: the fine lines and small white specks in the dark field on the angel side appear to be mostly on the clear film window that seals the medal in the cover. A few light hairlines may be on the medal itself; the medal has not been removed, so this cannot be fully confirmed.
  • Medal, eagle side: clean mirror fields. The tiny dark marks right at the rim edge are on the window edge and cover opening, not in the medal's field.
  • Cover: a faint round impression in the paper to the right of the medal, below the cancel (from storage), and light handling. The cover carries a typed address from the original subscriber.
  • Stamp and cancel: clean, bright stamp with a crisp Boston first day cancel.
  • Album page: the bright streaks in the photos are glare on the clear vinyl sleeve, and a small number is written on the page edge by others.
  • Certificate, letter and envelope: clean.

Please see all photos, which are the best description.

Ungraded and uncertified; the medal has not been removed from the cover. Ships flat and protected.
