1971 was the first year of the Eisenhower dollar, and the San Francisco Mint struck special 40% silver proofs for collectors alongside the everyday copper-nickel coins. This is one of those first-year silver proofs, honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the obverse and the Apollo 11 moon landing on the reverse, with the eagle landing on the lunar surface and Earth in the distance.
