The S mint mark sits to the right of the date and the designer's FS initials are below the bust. The obverse shows Thomas Jefferson; the reverse shows Monticello. Approximate grade: Choice Proof, with reflective mirror fields, squared rims and sharp detail in the hair and on Monticello. Rainbow toning: natural rainbow toning on both sides, with gold, rose, violet and blue tones that change as the coin is tilted in the light. Please see all the photos, taken in different lighting. Please note: small orange-gold toning spots on the bust and coat, scattered spotting in the reverse fields, and light hairlines visible at certain angles. Please see the photos. Composition: copper-nickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) Denomination: 5 Cents About the series: Felix Schlag won a public competition to design the Jefferson nickel, introduced in 1938 with Monticello on the reverse. From late 1942 through 1945 the nickel was made of 35% silver to save nickel for the war effort; these “war nickels” carry a large mintmark above Monticello.
