Offered here is a 1966 Jefferson nickel from the Special Mint Set (SMS), certified MS 67 by NGC in a purple-core holder with NGC's bee and honeycomb label art.

From 1965 to 1967 the U.S. Mint made no proof sets and sold Special Mint Sets instead, struck with extra care on polished dies for collectors. Only 2,260,000 1966 SMS nickels were made. 1966 is also the first year designer Felix Schlag's "FS" initials appear on the nickel, below Jefferson's bust, and they are crisp on this coin.

The coin has full, even satin luster with sharp detail in Jefferson's hair and on Monticello. MS 67 is a superb gem grade for the issue. The purple glow in the photos comes from the holder core, not toning.
