A World War II silver-alloy nickel with the large D mint mark above Monticello on the reverse. Sharp Monticello steps and design details with attractive natural toning. Approximate grade: BU. Composition: 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese. Weight 5.0 g. Diameter 21.2 mm. Contains about 0.056 oz of pure silver. About the series: Felix Schlag won a public competition to design the Jefferson nickel, introduced in 1938 with Monticello on the reverse. From late 1942 through 1945 the nickel was made of 35% silver to save nickel for the war effort; these “war nickels” carry a large mintmark above Monticello.
