1944-S Jefferson War Nickel NGC MS65 Trader Bea Purple Core 35% Silver WWII 5C
Offered here is a 1944-S Jefferson "War Nickel", struck at the San Francisco Mint and certified MS65 by NGC.
From 1942 to 1945 nickel was needed for the war effort, so the Mint struck five-cent pieces in a special alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese (about 0.056 oz of pure silver). To mark the change, the mint mark was made large and moved above Monticello's dome, and the big S is plain on this coin. 21,640,000 were struck at San Francisco in 1944.
Gem Uncirculated: bright, satiny luster with light golden toning toward the rims, as the photos show. It is housed in an NGC holder with the Trader Bea purple core and bee-and-honeycomb label, a special label used for hand-selected, eye-appealing coins.
Grading service: NGC
Grade: MS65
Certification number: 8354843-021 (verify at NGCcoin.com)
