Offered here is a 1944 Mercury (Winged Liberty Head) dime, struck at the Philadelphia Mint during World War II. There is no mint mark on the reverse, left of the fasces base, which is correct for Philadelphia. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the Mercury dime is one of the most admired U.S. silver designs.
The date 1944 is clear, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST are bold, and every letter of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DIME stands clear of the rim.
Grade: Very Fine. The diagonal bands on the fasces are visible and the vertical rods show above and below the center bands, softer through the middle. The upper wing feathers are separated and the hair curls are outlined, with the highest points of the hair, cheek and the center bands worn smooth.
Condition, please read: light gray toning with darker toning at the rims. Scattered light marks and fine hairline scratches from circulation on both sides, most noticeable in the obverse field around the B of LIBERTY and on the cheek and neck. A tiny dark spot on the right edge of the fasces. No rim damage or holes. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
