Offered here is a 1944-D Lincoln Wheat cent, struck at the Denver Mint during World War II. Cents of 1944 to 1946 were made partly from melted-down spent cartridge cases, which is why collectors call them "shell case" cents.

The date 1944 and the D mint mark are clear below the date on the obverse. IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY are complete, and ONE CENT, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM are bold on the reverse.

Grade: Very Fine (VF), Brown. All the lines in both wheat ears are present, with the upper lines worn. The cheek and jaw are separated, the bow tie and ear are visible, and some hair detail remains, with wear on the top of the head and the cheek.

Condition, please read: in fairness, this coin has a small pit at the base of Lincoln's neck behind the jaw, plus smaller dark pits and spots on the hair, coat and fields. There are scratches in the obverse field in front of the chin and a short mark near the date. The rim has some roughness and small bumps, most noticeable at the top of the obverse and below the date, with a few small nicks on the reverse rim. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.

Composition: 95% copper, 5% zinc (WWII shell case alloy)
Designer: Victor D. Brenner
Condition: Ungraded (raw coin, not certified)
