Offered here is a 1943-S Jefferson "War Nickel" from the San Francisco Mint, certified Genuine by NGC in a World War II label holder with Tiger tank artwork. NGC attributes these special-label coins by date range as (1942-1945) 5C War Nickel; on this coin the 1943 date is clear on the obverse and the large S mint mark sits above Monticello's dome.

From 1942 to 1945 nickel was needed for the war effort, so the Mint struck five-cent pieces in a special alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese (about 0.056 oz of pure silver). To mark the change, the mint mark was made large and moved above Monticello's dome.

Toning: the coin has original gray toning with gold, rose and blue iridescent hints, strongest toward the rims on both sides.

Condition, please read: this is a circulated coin. Jefferson's hair and cheek show wear, and the reverse shows wear on the high points of Monticello's dome and building, with light marks on both sides. The holder plastic has scratches from handling, which show in the close-up photos. Please see the photos, which are the best description.
