1942-1945 S Jefferson War Nickel 5C NGC Genuine World War II Label 35% Silver
Offered here is a Jefferson "War Nickel" from the San Francisco Mint, certified Genuine by NGC in a World War II label holder with Tiger tank artwork. NGC attributes it as (1942-1945) 5C War Nickel.
From 1942 to 1945 nickel was needed for the war effort, so the Mint struck five-cent pieces in a special alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese (about 0.056 oz of pure silver). To mark the change, the mint mark was made large and moved above Monticello's dome, and the big S is plain on this coin.
Condition, please read: this is a well-circulated coin with heavy dark corrosion spotting across the obverse. The date cannot be read, which is why NGC lists it by its date range, and no specific year is claimed. On the reverse, a long thin line runs from the building past the dome toward the rim at upper right; part of it may be on the holder plastic rather than the coin. The holder shows light handling scuffs. Please see the photos, which are the best description.
