1939-S Mercury Dime 10C XF-AU 90% Silver San Francisco Mint Winged Liberty1939-S Mercury (Winged Liberty Head) Dime from the San Francisco Mint, with the S mintmark to the left of the fasces on the reverse. Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated (XF-AU): light wear on Liberty’s hair and wing feathers, with sharp detail on the fasces and branches. Bright silver surfaces with light toning. The 1939-S has a mintage of 10,540,000, noticeably lower than the Philadelphia and Denver dimes of the same year, which gives the San Francisco coin a better-date feel. Each coin is 90% silver and 10% copper and contains 0.0723 troy ounce of pure silver. About the series: Adolph A. Weinman’s Winged Liberty Head dime, struck from 1916 to 1945, shows Liberty in a winged cap symbolizing freedom of thought; the public mistook her for the Roman god Mercury and the nickname stuck.
