Offered here is a 1934 Winged Liberty Head (“Mercury”) Dime from the Philadelphia Mint. Sculptor Adolph A. Weinman’s Liberty wears a winged cap symbolizing freedom of thought, which the public mistook for the Roman god Mercury. Struck during the Great Depression — no Mercury dimes were made at all in 1932 or 1933 — the 1934 marks the return of dime production. A well-circulated example with the date and major design elements still clearly readable.
