Offered here is a 1928-S Buffalo nickel from the San Francisco Mint, a mintage of about 6.9 million, far below the 23 million struck at Philadelphia that year. The 1928-S is known for a soft strike, and it is scarce in the higher circulated grades.
Date and mint, please note: identified as 1928-S in hand. The date is heavily worn and cannot be read in the photos, and the S mint mark below FIVE CENTS is worn to a small trace.
Grade: About Good. On the obverse the date is worn away, there is no horn, and LIBERTY is worn into the rim at the tops of the letters. The Indian's profile, braid and feathers are clearly outlined. The reverse is stronger than the obverse: the rim stands clear of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM is partly readable, FIVE CENTS is bold, and the bison is fully outlined.
Condition, please read: in fairness, the coin has scattered fine scratches on both sides, mostly on the cheek, neck and the bison's body, and dark surface spotting in the fields, heaviest along the lower obverse and on the bison. The surfaces are an even gray from circulation. No holes, bends or rim damage seen. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: 75% copper, 25% nickel
Designer: James Earle Fraser
Condition: ungraded, raw coin
