Offered here is a 1928 Buffalo nickel (Indian Head five cents), struck at the Philadelphia Mint, which used no mint mark. James Earle Fraser's classic design shows a Native American profile on the front and an American bison on the back.
Fine. LIBERTY stands clear of the rim, the hair braid and feathers show good detail, and the reverse lettering, including FIVE CENTS, is bold with the rim fully separate. The shoulder fur on the bison is visible and the horn is partly outlined. The date is the weakest part of the coin: the 2 and 8 are clear, while the 1 and 9 are faint and partly hidden by dark spots (see the date close-up).
Condition, please read: in fairness, the coin has scattered dark surface spots on both sides, heaviest around the date, on the Indian's hair and on the bison's back and hindquarter, plus scattered light scratches and contact marks from circulation, mostly on the cheek and on the bison's body. Natural gray color. No holes or rim damage seen. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: 75% copper, 25% nickel
Mintage: 23,411,000
Condition: Ungraded (raw coin, not certified)
The coin shown is the exact coin you will receive.
