Offered here is a 1925-S Buffalo nickel from the San Francisco mint, with a clear S mint mark below FIVE CENTS on the reverse. The 1925-S had a mintage of about 6.3 million, one of the lower-mintage dates of the 1920s. It is the Type 2 design, with FIVE CENTS in the recessed panel below the bison's flat ground line, as struck from 1913 through 1938.
Date, please note: the date is mostly worn away. Under magnification it reads 1925, but it is faint and may be hard to see in the photos, where only a trace of the digits shows. Weak dates are typical of 1920s San Francisco Buffalo nickels.
Grade: About Good, partial date, with Very Good details. The grade is held at About Good by the date. The rest of the coin is better: LIBERTY is complete and clear of the rim, the rims are full on both sides, and the Indian's profile, braid and feathers are outlined. On the reverse, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, FIVE CENTS and the S mint mark are all bold, and the bison's head, fur line and tail are outlined.
Condition, please read: in fairness, the coin shows even circulation wear, a few light scratches on the cheek and the neck near the braid, scattered small contact marks on both sides, and darker spotting on the bison's shoulder and side. No holes, rim damage or corrosion seen. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: 75% copper, 25% nickel
Designer: James Earle Fraser
Condition: ungraded, raw coin
