Offered here is a genuine 1921 Buffalo (Indian Head) Nickel, struck at the Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark below FIVE CENTS). James Earle Fraser's classic design, with his "F" initial below the date, is one of the most loved American coins.
Date: 1921. The date is worn and weak, as is common on this series because the raised date was the first part of the design to wear away, but it reads 1921 under a loupe. The 1921 Philadelphia issue has a lower mintage (about 10.7 million) than most dates of the 1920s.
Grade: Fine. The rest of the design holds up well: LIBERTY is full, the braid, ribbon and hair strands are clear, and on the reverse part of the bison's horn shows, with fur detail on the head and upper back and a full tail and legs. Full rims on both sides.
Condition, please read: there is a small green spot on the obverse on the head near the feathers, a few small dark spots on the bison's body and hindquarters, a weak, worn date, and scattered light marks and scratches from circulation on both sides. No holes or bends. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Year: 1921
Mint: Philadelphia (no mint mark)
Composition: 75% copper, 25% nickel
Condition: ungraded, raw coin
The coin ships in a protective holder.
