Offered here is a 1919 Buffalo nickel from the Philadelphia mint (no mint mark below FIVE CENTS), struck the year after World War I ended. James Earle Fraser's Indian head and American bison design is one of the most loved in U.S. coinage.
Grade: About Good, partial date. The last two digits of the date, "19", are readable and the first two are worn away, as often happens on Buffalo nickels because the date sits high on the design. The rest of the coin shows more detail than the date: LIBERTY is complete and separate from the rim, the feathers and braid are outlined, and on the reverse the full legend, part of E PLURIBUS UNUM, a bold FIVE CENTS and the bison's head, legs and tail all show, with full rims on both sides.
Condition, please read: in fairness, the obverse has scattered dark spotting (small pits or corrosion-type spots), heaviest in the hair, cheek and date area, with lighter spots on the bison. There are light scratches on the Indian's cheek and on the bison's body. No holes or rim damage seen. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Mintage: 60,868,000
Composition: 75% copper, 25% nickel
Designer: James Earle Fraser
Condition: ungraded, raw coin
