1917 Mercury Dime 10C F Fine W E Counterstamp Counterstamped 90% Silver US Coin

The Mercury dime, properly the Winged Liberty Head dime, was designed by Adolph A. Weinman and struck from 1916 to 1945. This 1917 Philadelphia issue carries a fascinating twist for the counterstamp collector.

This exact coin bears a 'W' counterstamp in the obverse field and a boxed 'E' counterstamp on the reverse — old privately-applied punches, shown up close in the photos. Counterstamped coins are a collectible niche of their own; each one is one of a kind. Beneath the stamps the coin shows moderate, even wear consistent with the Fine letter grade: full rims, bold date, and clear major devices.
