1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickel 5C Raised Mound Variety 1 First Year of Issue Good
Offered here is a 1913 Type 1 Buffalo (Indian Head) nickel, from the first year of James Earle Fraser's classic design. On the Type 1 (Variety 1) reverse the bison stands on a raised mound with FIVE CENTS on the mound itself. The design was changed partway through 1913 to the Type 2, with FIVE CENTS recessed below a flat ground line, so the raised mound reverse was struck for only part of one year.
Grade: Good. Part of the date is visible, LIBERTY is faint, and the horn is worn to its base. The reverse is strong for the grade: the rim stands clear of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM is still there, and FIVE CENTS is clear on the mound.
Condition, please read: a dark line, like ink or marker, runs from the rim near AMERICA down across the bison's back to the belly; it is left as found. Scattered fine scratches and circulation marks on both sides, most on the Indian's cheek and the bison's body. Natural gray tone. No rim damage or holes seen. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: 75% copper, 25% nickel
Condition: ungraded, raw coin
The coin ships in a protective holder.
