Offered here is a vintage western horseshoe belt buckle set with a genuine 1884 Morgan silver dollar. The gold-tone horseshoe is inlaid with brown enamel nail dots, and the coin sits in a silver-tone ring inside a gold-tone beaded bezel, held between two silver-tone ball studs.
The coin: a genuine 90% silver 1884 Morgan dollar. We grade it Very Good (VG); it is not certified and has no numeric grade. The portrait is fully outlined, LIBERTY on the headband is complete, the legend, all stars and the date are bold, and the hair and cotton blossoms are worn mostly smooth with the main outlines showing.
Mounting and mint mark: the coin is mounted in the buckle. We have not removed it or weighed it. The back of the coin is covered by a printed paper disc (partly hidden by the buckle bar; the words "FOR" and "Stone" and parts of other words show), so the coin's reverse and mint mark are not visible. 1884 Morgans were struck at Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco and Carson City.
Condition, please read:
- Coin: many light scratches and marks on the obverse, mostly on the cheek, neck and fields, from circulation and wear in the buckle.
- Plating: the gold-tone finish is worn on the high points and edges of the horseshoe, with the base metal showing in spots (for example at the lower left), plus light scratches across the polished surfaces.
- Small green spots (verdigris) on parts of the beaded bezel, and a few small rust-colored specks on the textured panel left of the coin.
- Enamel: glossy, with light surface marks and a small scuff at the upper left. We did not see chips in the photos.
- Back: general plating wear, darkened slotted screw heads, belt loop and hook intact.
Size (approximate, from our ruler photos): about 3 1/4 in wide including the belt loop, by about 2 3/4 in tall. Please measure your belt before buying.
Please see all the photos, which are part of the description. A great piece of western wear and a real 19th century silver dollar in one.
