Offered here is a genuine 1878 Seated Liberty quarter dollar in 90% silver, from the With Motto type struck after the 1873-74 arrows were removed. Seated Liberty quarters were made from 1838 to 1891, and this is a real piece of 19th century American coinage.
Mint mark: cannot be determined. On Seated quarters the mint mark sits on the reverse below the eagle, and that area of this coin is worn smooth, so we do not claim any particular mint. The coin is sold as an 1878 quarter only.
Grade: About Good (AG). On the obverse, the seated figure of Liberty is fully outlined, the date 1878 is bold, all 13 stars are visible and the rim is complete, while LIBERTY on the shield is worn away. On the reverse, the eagle, shield lines, olive branch and arrows are clearly outlined, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is mostly readable but merges into the rim in places; QUAR. DOL. is worn away. The obverse is a solid Good; the weaker reverse brings the overall grade to About Good.
Condition, please read: heavy, even circulation wear on both sides, with scattered light scratches across Liberty and the fields, a small cross-shaped scratch in the right reverse field near AMERICA, and a short scratch on the eagle below the shield. No holes, bends or rim dings. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Year: 1878
Mint: not determinable (mint mark area worn)
Composition: 90% silver, 10% copper (0.1808 oz silver)
Condition: ungraded, raw coin
The coin ships in a protective holder.
