Offered here is a 1873 Indian Head cent from the Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark). With about 11.7 million struck, 1873 has one of the lower mintages of the bronze Indian cents and is a better date from the scarce early 1870s, the same stretch that gave us the 1871 and 1872 semi-keys.
Grade: VG (Very Good). Every feather in the headdress is boldly outlined and stands apart from the head, with the tips clear against the field. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date are bold and clear of the rim, and the rims are full with denticles showing all the way around. On the reverse, ONE CENT is bold, the shield lines are clear, and the oak wreath shows its leaf clusters, ribbon and arrows. LIBERTY on the headband is worn away, so this is a low VG.
Condition, please read: dark chocolate brown with the high points showing lighter copper. There are greenish and bluish-gray environmental deposits on the reverse, heaviest in the left side of the wreath and in the fields around ONE CENT, plus scattered small green specks on the obverse fields. Surfaces are somewhat granular, as is typical for a coin with this kind of toning. No rim damage seen. Please look at all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc)
Mintage: 11,676,500
Condition: ungraded, raw coin. The grade is our opinion only.
The coin ships in a protective holder.
The coin shown is the exact coin you will receive.
