Offered here is a genuine 1869 Shield two cent piece struck in bronze at the Philadelphia Mint. Only 1,546,500 were minted in 1869, a better date in this short 1864-1873 series. The two cent piece was the first US coin to carry the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.

Grade: Good (G). The date is clear and the full rims are intact. On the reverse, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 2 CENTS are bold and the wreath is outlined with some grain detail. On the obverse the shield, leaves and motto scroll are outlined, but the motto lettering is not readable.

Condition, please read: this coin has environmental damage. There are scattered green corrosion (verdigris) spots on both sides, including a small green spot on the center of the shield that looks like a tiny hole in the photos (it appears to be a corrosion pit), rough porous surfaces on the obverse, heavy dark and purple toning, and several light scratches across the shield and obverse field. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.

Year: 1869
Mint: Philadelphia (no mint mark)
Composition: bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc)
Mintage: 1,546,500
Condition: ungraded, raw coin

The coin ships in a protective holder.
