1869 Shield Nickel 5C G Good No Rays 19th Century Type Coin Antique US NickelOffered here is an 1869 Shield Nickel from the Philadelphia Mint. Shield nickels were the first US five-cent pieces struck in copper-nickel, introduced in 1866 just after the Civil War, when silver coins had vanished from circulation. 16,395,000 were struck in 1869. This coin shows heavy, honest circulation wear typical of the grade. The shield outline, vertical stripes and cross are clear, and the large 5 and stars on the reverse are well defined. This is the No Rays reverse, used from 1867 onward after the rays between the stars were removed. Natural olive-gray toning with deeper color in the protected areas; the date is weak, as is common on worn Shield nickels. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Shield nickel (1866-1883) is an affordable way to own a genuine 19th-century American type coin.
Ungraded and uncertified. The approximate grade is our opinion only. THE COIN SHOWN IS THE EXACT COIN YOU WILL RECEIVE. |
BOURNE2TREASURE
WHO WE ARE Bourne2Treasure is a family-owned business based in Dayton, TN, proud to be celebrating our 25th year in operation. Along the way we’ve earned over 27,000 pieces of feedback as a seller.
SHIPPING Every coin we sell ships in protective packaging — no exceptions. The exact container depends on the shipping class: for example, our Standard Envelope option is limited to a maximum of 1/4" thickness, so a bubble mailer isn’t used there. Instead, coins travel in a vinyl flip, a thick baggie, or a cardboard flip, whichever best protects that particular coin. We ship daily, Monday through Friday, excluding all USPS holidays.
RETURNS / GUARANTEE We maintain (unless otherwise noted on items like bullion) a 30-day, FREE-to-you return policy. All we want is happy customers — if you don’t like what we send, just send it back, free of charge.
QUESTIONS? CONTACT US Contact us Monday–Friday, 9–5 EST, with any questions or concerns. Our number one goal is happy customers who buy from us time and time again. If you ever have an issue, please let us know — and remember, our return policy above has you covered.
GRADING DISCLAIMER We arrive at an approximate grade using a combination of our own years of experience and, increasingly, Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are not a professional grading service, and any grade shown is only an approximation — please make your own determination based on the photos provided.
