1864 Indian Head Cent 1C Copper-Nickel G Good Civil War Era Last Year CN Type

Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the Indian Head cent was struck from 1859 to 1909. From 1860 the reverse carried an oak wreath with a small shield.

1864 was the last year of the thick copper-nickel cent. Partway through the year the Mint switched to the thinner bronze composition, so 1864 cents come in both types. This coin weighs 4.52 grams, confirming the copper-nickel type (bronze cents weigh about 3.1 grams).

It grades about Good: full rims and a clear date, with the feathers and wreath worn smooth. Brownish toning with some green-blue tint, and small rim nicks at the upper left of the reverse.

  • Year: 1864
  • Type: Copper-Nickel
  • Weight: 4.52 g (copper-nickel standard 4.67 g)
  • Composition: 88% copper, 12% nickel; 19 mm
  • Approximate grade: G

BOURNE2TREASURE
WHO WE ARE Bourne2Treasure is a family-owned business based in Dayton, TN, proud to be celebrating our 25th year in operation. Along the way we’ve earned over 27,000 pieces of feedback as a seller.
SHIPPING Every coin we sell ships in protective packaging — no exceptions. The exact container depends on the shipping class: for example, our Standard Envelope option is limited to a maximum of 1/4" thickness, so a bubble mailer isn’t used there. Instead, coins travel in a vinyl flip, a thick baggie, or a cardboard flip, whichever best protects that particular coin. We ship daily, Monday through Friday, excluding all USPS holidays.
RETURNS / GUARANTEE We maintain (unless otherwise noted on items like bullion) a 30-day, FREE-to-you return policy. All we want is happy customers — if you don’t like what we send, just send it back, free of charge.
QUESTIONS? CONTACT US Contact us Monday–Friday, 9–5 EST, with any questions or concerns. Our number one goal is happy customers who buy from us time and time again. If you ever have an issue, please let us know — and remember, our return policy above has you covered.
GRADING DISCLAIMER We arrive at an approximate grade using a combination of our own years of experience and, increasingly, Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are not a professional grading service, and any grade shown is only an approximation — please make your own determination based on the photos provided.
