1864 Indian Head Cent 1C Bronze AG-G Civil War Era Penny First Year Bronze Type

Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the Indian Head cent was struck from 1859 to 1909. From 1860 the reverse carried an oak wreath with a small shield.

In 1864 the Mint switched the cent from thick copper-nickel to bronze, so this is the first year of the bronze type.

This coin weighs 2.81 grams, about 0.3 g under the 3.11 g standard for bronze, likely from heavy wear and old surface loss - we note it so you know exactly what you are getting. The scarce 'L on ribbon' variety cannot be confirmed because that area is worn smooth, so it is listed as a regular 1864 bronze cent.

It grades about AG-G: a bold date, weak lettering partly merging into the rim, mostly flat feathers, and a worn but readable wreath and shield.

  • Year: 1864
  • Type: Bronze
  • Weight: 2.81 g (bronze standard 3.11 g)
  • Composition: Bronze; 19 mm
  • Approximate grade: AG-G

BOURNE2TREASURE
WHO WE ARE Bourne2Treasure is a family-owned business based in Dayton, TN, proud to be celebrating our 25th year in operation. Along the way we’ve earned over 27,000 pieces of feedback as a seller.
SHIPPING Every coin we sell ships in protective packaging — no exceptions. The exact container depends on the shipping class: for example, our Standard Envelope option is limited to a maximum of 1/4" thickness, so a bubble mailer isn’t used there. Instead, coins travel in a vinyl flip, a thick baggie, or a cardboard flip, whichever best protects that particular coin. We ship daily, Monday through Friday, excluding all USPS holidays.
RETURNS / GUARANTEE We maintain (unless otherwise noted on items like bullion) a 30-day, FREE-to-you return policy. All we want is happy customers — if you don’t like what we send, just send it back, free of charge.
QUESTIONS? CONTACT US Contact us Monday–Friday, 9–5 EST, with any questions or concerns. Our number one goal is happy customers who buy from us time and time again. If you ever have an issue, please let us know — and remember, our return policy above has you covered.
GRADING DISCLAIMER We arrive at an approximate grade using a combination of our own years of experience and, increasingly, Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are not a professional grading service, and any grade shown is only an approximation — please make your own determination based on the photos provided.
