1863 Indian Head Cent VF Copper-Nickel Civil War Penny 1c Partial LIBERTY CoinThe 1863 Indian Head cent was struck in copper-nickel at the height of the Civil War, when small cents were hoarded and used as everyday money. It was the last year of the copper-nickel composition before the switch to bronze in 1864. This exact coin grades Very Fine with partial LIBERTY and good feather and wreath detail. It has dark carbon spots on the cheek, below the chin and in some letters. There is a dark gouge on the left reverse rim at about 9 o’clock, a small rim nick at the bottom of the reverse, and light verdigris specks on the reverse.
