Offered here is a genuine 1863 Army & Navy patriotic Civil War token, one of the private cent-sized copper tokens that circulated in place of scarce small change during the Civil War. One side reads ARMY & NAVY inside a laurel and oak wreath, with crossed swords tied at the bottom. The other side shows Liberty in a cap, surrounded by 13 stars, with the date 1863 below.
Grade: VF (Very Fine). ARMY & NAVY is bold and sharp, and the wreath keeps much of its leaf and acorn detail, with wear on the high points of the leaves and the bow. Liberty's profile, cap and curls are clear with wear on the hair and cap high points. All 13 stars, the date and the beaded borders are full.
Condition, please read: brown copper with darker spots in the fields on both sides. Light scratches and marks in the fields, most noticeable in the Army & Navy field and across Liberty's portrait. A few small rim bumps and edge marks, including along the left side of the Liberty side. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: copper
Date: 1863
Type: Patriotic Civil War token (Army & Navy / Liberty head)
