1862 Indian Head Cent Penny 1C VF Very Fine Copper-Nickel Civil War Oak Wreath
Offered here is an 1862 United States Indian Head Cent, struck in copper-nickel at the Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark) during the Civil War. The copper-nickel Indian cents were made from 1859 to 1864, and the 1862 carries the oak wreath and shield reverse introduced in 1860.
Approximate grade: VF (Very Fine). All seven letters of LIBERTY are complete on the headband, with LIB a little weaker than ERTY. The feathers show their center lines and most of their detail, worn at the tips. On the reverse the shield stripes are separate, the oak leaves and acorns show some fine detail, and the ribbon bow is clear.
Please note: green verdigris on the reverse, mostly in the wreath and fields at the left and lower left and around the bow, with small spots near the shield. Rim bumps and nicks: a flattened area on the obverse rim above OF, roughness along the left obverse rim near UNITED, and a bump on the upper left reverse rim. The obverse surfaces are somewhat rough and mottled. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: copper-nickel (88% copper, 12% nickel)
Mintage: 28,075,000
Denomination: 1 Cent
Ungraded and uncertified. The approximate grade is our opinion only. THE COIN SHOWN IS THE EXACT COIN YOU WILL RECEIVE.
