Offered here is an 1861 Seated Liberty quarter from the Philadelphia Mint, struck in the first year of the Civil War. This is the No Motto type, made before IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse in 1866. The Philadelphia Mint struck 4,853,600 quarters in 1861, and each one is 90% silver (0.1808 troy ounce of actual silver). Few survived the melting pots of the following decades.
Grade: Very Good (VG). Full rims all the way around both sides, a bold date, and all 13 stars clear. Liberty's outline is complete and part of LIBERTY on the shield can still be read, with the middle letters showing best under angled light. On the reverse the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUAR. DOL. are bold, the eagle, shield lines, olive branch and arrows are all clear, and some wing feathers remain. No mint mark under the eagle (Philadelphia).
Condition, please read: in fairness, the obverse has many fine scratches and hairlines across Liberty and the fields, and some dark spots and toning, mostly in the right field and on the lower figure. The reverse has a few light scratches (one runs from the eagle's head toward AMERICA) and a small nick on the rim at the right edge near the A of AMERICA. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
