Approximate grade: AG (About Good). The date 1859 is bold and OF AMERICA is clear, and the outline of the Indian and the feather tips show, with no LIBERTY on the headband. UNITED STATES is worn into the rim on the left side, with only the U clear. Please note: heavy wear on both sides. The reverse is worn smooth: the laurel wreath shows only in outline, the left side of the wreath blends into the rim, and ONE CENT is very weak and only partly readable. Dark spots (old corrosion or pitting) across both sides, mostly in the fields and around the reverse lettering. Small rim nicks on the obverse at about 1 o'clock (above the O of OF) and 10 o'clock, and a small dark nick on the reverse rim at 6 o'clock. Please see the photos. Composition: copper-nickel (88% copper, 12% nickel) Denomination: 1 Cent About the series: Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the Indian Head cent was struck from 1859 to 1909. The 1859 cents have a laurel wreath reverse; from 1860 the reverse changed to an oak wreath with a small shield. The cents were copper-nickel until 1864, when the Mint switched to the bronze composition used for the rest of the series.

| SHIPPING Every coin we sell ships in protective packaging — no exceptions. The exact container depends on the shipping class: for example, our Standard Envelope option is limited to a maximum of 1/4" thickness, so a bubble mailer isn’t used there. Instead, coins travel in a vinyl flip, a thick baggie, or a cardboard flip, whichever best protects that particular coin. We ship daily, Monday through Friday, excluding all USPS holidays. |
