Offered here is an 1858 Flying Eagle cent, from the last year of the short three-year Flying Eagle series (1856-1858) and one of the first small cents made by the U.S. Mint after the large cent was retired. Struck in copper-nickel at Philadelphia (no mint mark).

Date: the "58" of the date is clear below the eagle; the "18" is worn and corroded away. Flying Eagle cents were only struck dated 1856, 1857 and 1858, so the "58" identifies this coin as an 1858. The Large Letters or Small Letters variety cannot be told from the photos because AMERICA is too worn, so no variety is claimed.

Grade: About Good. The eagle is in full outline with no feather detail. UNITED STATES OF is readable, AMERICA is weak, and the date is only partly visible. On the reverse the wreath is in outline and ONE CENT is faint but traceable. The rims are mostly complete.

Condition, please read: in fairness, this coin has heavy corrosion on both sides, with a rough, pitted surface, dark red-brown patches and spots of green verdigris (most visible on the reverse and in the obverse fields). There are also scattered scratches and marks, including a line across the lower obverse field. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.

Year: 1858
Mint: Philadelphia (no mint mark)
Type: Flying Eagle cent (1856-1858)
Composition: 88% copper, 12% nickel
Condition: Ungraded (raw coin, not certified)
