Offered here is an 1857 Seated Liberty half dime, a pre-Civil War 90% silver five cent piece struck at the Philadelphia mint (no mint mark; mintage 7,280,000). 1857 falls in the stars-obverse, no-arrows period (the arrows at the date were dropped after 1855 and the legend did not move to the obverse until 1860), making it a nice type coin for the series.
Grade: Good. The date 1857 is full and bold, all thirteen stars are visible, and Liberty is outlined with no letters of LIBERTY readable on the shield. The obverse rim is full. On the reverse, HALF DIME and the wreath are clear, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is mostly readable, with the letters at the lower left weak where they meet the rim.
Condition, please read: in fairness, this coin has heavy circulation wear and dark, uneven toning with dirt and encrustation in the recesses on both sides. There are green verdigris spots on the reverse near the bow and lower wreath, some rust-brown spotting, and light scattered marks. No holes seen. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: 90% silver, 10% copper (1.24 g)
Designer: Christian Gobrecht
Condition: ungraded, raw coin
