1857 Seated Liberty Half Dime H10C — AU — Lustrous
On offer is an 1857 Seated Liberty Half Dime in About Uncirculated condition — a tiny 15.5 mm sliver of pre-Civil War silver with real luster clinging around the stars, gown folds, and wreath. LIBERTY is full and sharp on the shield, the drapery lines are crisp, and the reverse wreath shows bold leaf detail under the HALF DIME legend. Only the lightest friction on the high points separates this one from Mint State.
Struck at Philadelphia in 1857 — the same year the large cent died and four years before the Civil War. High-grade survivors of these little half dimes are far scarcer than their mintage suggests, since most went straight into circulation and stayed there.
