Offered here is an 1857 Flying Eagle cent, the first year the new small copper-nickel cent was struck for circulation, replacing the old large cent. The Flying Eagle design was only made for circulation in 1857 and 1858, making it a short-lived and popular type coin.

Grade: Fine, with damage (see below). The eagle's head and eye are clear, the feather outlines and tips in the wings show, and the date and legends are bold. On the reverse, the wreath and ONE CENT are complete with some leaf detail remaining. Even medium-brown surfaces.

Condition, please read: this coin has a holed area: a round punched hole at the top of the obverse, at the end of STATES, which shows as a raised dome on the reverse at the bow of the wreath. From the photos it does not appear to be open all the way through, but please treat it as a holed coin. There is rim damage next to the hole and a rim bump to the left of the date (with matching marks on the reverse rim), plus scattered light marks from circulation. It is priced as a holed coin. A great affordable way to add this first-year type to a collection. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
