Offered here is a genuine 1857 Flying Eagle cent, the first year of issue of the Flying Eagle type. After the 1856 patterns, 1857 was the first year the U.S. Mint struck the new small copper-nickel cent for circulation, replacing the old large cent. The type lasted only two years, 1857 and 1858, before the Indian Head cent took over in 1859. A classic pre-Civil War type coin for any small cent collection.

Grade: Fine. The eagle is bold with a complete outline, and some feather detail remains on the breast and neck. The head, tail and the far wing are worn smooth, as expected for the grade. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1857 are full and clear. On the reverse, ONE CENT is bold and the wreath of corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco shows in outline with the bow clear, the finer leaf detail worn away.

Condition, please read: in fairness, this coin has the following issues. A small dark pit on the eagle's body, behind the head. Edge damage (a rim bump with darker discoloration) at about 4 o'clock on the obverse, which also shows at the lower right rim of the reverse. A thin line of small scratches across the far wing, plus scattered marks and some rough, porous texture from circulation. Uneven brown toning, darker around the letters and rims. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
