1854 Braided Hair Large Cent 1C — XF — Super Rainbow Toner
On offer is an 1854 Braided Hair Large Cent in Extremely Fine condition, and this one is a Super Rainbow Toner — blue, peach, and purple hues sweep across the surfaces of this big, hefty pure copper cent. Toned large cents with this much color and this much remaining detail are a treat, and the eye appeal here jumps right out of the photos.
The Braided Hair design by Christian Gobrecht was the final large cent type before the small cent arrived in 1857. The 1854 issue was struck only at Philadelphia, with a mintage of 4,236,156. This example shows sharp braid detail in Liberty's hair, bold stars, and strong wreath definition on the reverse — the kind of detail that earns an XF call — all under that wild rainbow toning.
