A one-year type coin struck when the silver weight was reduced in 1853. Seated Liberty, stars and date are clear, and the reverse wreath and HALF DIME legend are well defined with some light hairlines and a mark in the reverse field. Approximate grade: VF. Composition: 90% silver, 10% copper. Weight 1.24 g. Diameter 15.5 mm. About the series: Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design, showing Liberty seated with a shield and pole, appeared on U.S. silver coins from 1836 to 1891. In 1853, rising silver prices led Congress to reduce the weight of silver coins; the Mint marked the change with arrows beside the date (and, for 1853 only on quarters and halves, rays around the eagle).
