Offered here is an 1853 Seated Liberty Half Dime with Arrows at Date. Rising silver prices in the early 1850s meant U.S. silver coins were worth more melted than spent, so the Coinage Act of February 21, 1853 reduced their weight. The Mint placed small arrows beside the date to mark the new, lighter standard — a feature used only from 1853 to 1855, making this a distinct short-lived type. The design is by Christian Gobrecht. A classic piece of pre–Civil War American silver.
