Offered here is a genuine United States 1852 Braided Hair (Coronet Head) large cent, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the years before the Civil War. Large cents were the size of a modern half dollar and were struck in pure copper until the series ended in 1857.
Grade: we grade this coin Very Good (VG) details. It is not certified and has no numeric grade. The portrait is bold with the hair cords and much of the curl outline showing, LIBERTY on the coronet is weak but partly readable, all 13 stars and the full date are clear, and the reverse lettering, ONE CENT and wreath are strong.
Condition, please read:
- Holed: the coin was drilled for jewelry use. There is one small, clean round hole near the rim at the top of the obverse, just right of the top star (lower right on the reverse).
- Scratch: a thin diagonal scratch on the reverse runs from the lower rim up toward the bow, near the hole.
- Light scattered marks in the fields, a few dark spots near the back of the hair and the right obverse field, and some light roughness/corrosion on the right side of the reverse.
Please see all the photos, which are part of the description. A nice, affordable example of an 1852 large cent for a type set, a pre-Civil War collection, or for jewelry and crafts.
Composition: copper
Mint: Philadelphia (no mint mark)
Denomination: one cent
