1846 Braided Hair Large Cent 1C Small Date N-6 VG Very Good Copper Coin
Offered here is an 1846 Braided Hair large cent, Small Date, struck in pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint. 1846 large cents come in Small, Medium and Tall Date styles; this is the Small Date, identified by its compact digits and the nearly closed 6. It is the Mature Head style of the Braided Hair design, used from 1843 to 1857.
Variety: by our attribution using Grellman's Die Varieties of United States Large Cents 1840-1857, this appears to be Newcomb N-6 (R-1): the end of the lowest curl sits over the space between the 8 and the 4, and the bust tip sits over the left side of the 1. This is our attribution from photos, not a certification, so please check the photos and attribute for yourself.
Grade: VG (Very Good). The outline of the bust, the hair curls and the bun are clear, and all 13 stars are outlined. LIBERTY on the coronet is worn away. On the reverse the wreath leaves are outlined with some detail remaining, and ONE CENT and the legends are complete and readable. Rims are full all the way around.
Condition, please read: in fairness, there is a scratch through the CE of CENT on the reverse, scattered dark spots and light pitting in the obverse field to the right of the portrait, and small nicks on the lower left obverse rim. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: copper
Mintage: 4,120,800 (all 1846 varieties combined)
Condition: ungraded, raw coin
The coin ships in a protective holder.
The coin shown is the exact coin you will receive.
