1840 Braided Hair Large Cent 1C Large Date VF Very Fine Petite Head Copper Coin
Offered here is an 1840 Braided Hair large cent, Large Date, struck in pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint. 1840 is an early year of the Braided Hair design, from the Petite Head style used before the Mature Head of 1843.
Variety: by our attribution using Grellman's Die Varieties of United States Large Cents 1840-1857, this appears to be Newcomb N-5 (R-1): Large Date, the 0 recut at its upper left, and the crossbar of the 4 running into the 8 and 0. This is our attribution from photos, not a certification, so please check the photos and attribute for yourself.
Grade: VF (Very Fine). LIBERTY is bold and complete on the coronet, hair strands show over most of the head with the high points worn smooth, and all 13 stars are outlined. On the reverse the wreath leaves are outlined with some veins, and ONE CENT and the legends are sharp.
Condition, please read: in fairness, the surfaces are grainy and slightly rough, dark brown, as is common for large cents of this age. There are small green deposits in the reverse wreath, mostly on the left and lower leaves, a small curved mark in the field below CENT, and a small nick on the reverse rim at about 6 o'clock. Please see all the photos, which are the best description.
Composition: copper
Mintage: 2,462,700 (all 1840 varieties combined)
Condition: ungraded, raw coin
The coin ships in a protective holder.
The coin shown is the exact coin you will receive.
