| ✓ This is the EXACT coin you will receive 1822 Matron Head Large Cent Newcomb N-2 R-3 Scarce Variety Coronet Head AGOffered here is a genuine United States 1822 Matron Head (Coronet Head) large cent, attributed as Newcomb N-2, Rarity-3. Date: 1822. The first three digits (182) are readable on the coin; the final 2 is worn away. The year comes from the seller's attribution, and 1822 N-2 is rated R-3. Bank chop marks: the obverse has three cross-shaped (+) chop marks, one on the coronet in front of LIBERTY, one over the end of LIBERTY and one on the cheek, each with green deposits in the recess. Seller's note: marks of this style were typically applied by banks to show that wear had lowered a cent's weight below an acceptable level. Large cents of that era were valued for their copper weight. Condition, please read: we grade this coin About Good (AG). It is not certified, and we have not given it a numeric grade. The portrait is fully outlined, LIBER of LIBERTY is readable and all 13 stars show, but only three digits of the date remain, which holds it at About Good. On the reverse, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE are readable, and CENT is very weak. Damage, in addition to the chop marks: a long scratch across the left obverse field into the face, a scratch through the date, and many lighter scratches on the portrait. On the reverse there is a long diagonal scratch through the lower wreath and bow. The surfaces are dark brown and slightly rough, with spots of discoloration. We saw no rim dings or edge cuts. Please see all the photos. Composition: copper Mint: Philadelphia About the series: Large cents were the first coins made for circulation by the U.S. Mint, struck from 1793 to 1857 — each nearly the size of a modern half dollar. Early dates are attributed by Dr. William Sheldon’s die-variety numbers (S-numbers, 1793–1814) and later dates by Howard Newcomb’s (N-numbers, 1816–1857), with an R-rating for how rare each variety is.

The exact container depends on the shipping class: for example, our Standard Envelope option is limited to a maximum of 1/4" thickness, so a bubble mailer isn’t used there. Instead, coins travel in a vinyl flip, a thick baggie, or a cardboard flip, whichever best protects that particular coin. We ship daily, Monday through Friday, excluding all USPS holidays. |
