The Lincoln Shield Cent (or "Union Shield" penny) is the circulating one-cent coin of the United States, introduced in 2010 to replace the Lincoln Memorial design. The reverse features a stylized Union Shield representing the preservation of the country as a single, united nation.
Design & Composition
- Obverse: Retains Victor D. Brenner’s iconic profile of Abraham Lincoln, used since 1909.
- Reverse: The "Union Shield" designed by Lyndall Bass, featuring 13 vertical stripes and a horizontal scroll inscribed with \(E \ PLURIBUS \ UNUM\).
- Composition: 99.2% zinc and 0.8% core, with a 100% copper plating, bringing the total weight to 2.5 grams
Collectibility & Value
While billions of these coins were produced for daily commerce, mint-state and error specimens can command significant premiums:
- High Grades: Uncirculated coins graded 67 or higher by services like PCGS or NGC can sell for hundreds or thousands of dollars
- Errors & Varieties: Keep an eye out for off-center strikes, die errors like "struck through grease," retained cuds, and hub doubling on the date or the word LIBERTY.
